Yup, it got me! As with pretty much all common cold symptoms, I struggled through Wednesday hoping it was just some random allergic reaction to a cleaning product maybe. I haven’t had a cold or even a runny nose in nearly 3 years, it can’t be happening now?! Well, ok it is the beginning of the cold and flu season but I can’t go down with a cold now. I’m starting a new job on Monday!
Raw garlic – my best, natural, homemade cold remedy
It got worse in the late afternoon, when I could hardly manage my open-tap-like runny nose, my throat became very sore and my swollen sinus gave me a mother of all headaches. Chills, fatigue etc… Oh, dear… I know that a common cold can keep its victim in clutches for weeks and even turn into something nastier if you don’t act fast… I better do something about it.
I sliced up a garlic clove and placed one of the slices on the back of my tongue. I know this simple homemade cold remedy works and it will get me out of trouble in days! As it always does!
Garlic, thanks to its super powerful, antibacterial compound called Allicin, is a very powerful yet simple homemade cold remedy most of us always have in the pantry. The initial relief comes within minutes (I notice that the swelling in my throat went down), but you have to give it a chance and allow for the magic to happen.
When the first slice of garlic starts to loose its flavour, spit it out and replace with a new one and repeat until you exhaust all garlic clove slices. Next time you experience sore throat and common cold symptoms try this method, top it up with a punch dose of vitamin C.
You might not know this, but in fact the common cold or flu medication simply doesn’t exist. This is why you can’t get a common cold or flu medication with a prescription or over the counter. However, the symptoms can be managed and minimised with simple, homemade remedies like raw garlic, honey, ginger and turmeric.
You could also support yourself with my super easy to make and quite tasty for a change (!!) Garlic Honey Syrup for a Sore Throat, which contains all of them and helps the throat tickle and a cough. Have it 3-4 times a day if you can.
Today is Friday and I am feeling significantly better. Sucking on a slice of raw garlic clove like it was a tablet allows for the antibacterial and antiviral compounds to be absorbed into your system and start work to make you feel better. It always works for me and the sooner I do it the sooner the cold and flu symptoms go away.
Why not just chew up and swallow garlic instead of slicing it?
Raw garlic consumed in larger quantities can irritate your stomach and if you’re already feeling a bit tender this is the last thing you need. Slicing garlic thinly and allowing for it to sit on my tongue so all the juices and the amazing allicin can get absorbed in a more controlled manner works best for me! The garlic juices also get to work directly on the sore throat and this is why the initial relief of a sore throat and a runny nose comes so fast!
It is little over 48 hours since my common cold symptoms started to show. I also took a high dose of vitamin C (which supports our natural immune system) and over the last 2 days I sucked on juices of 3 whole garlic cloves, in slices. I am not 100%, but certainly incomparably better than 24h ago and surely on the road to recovery.
Does Hot Toddy fight the common cold?
Whether it is a hot toddy, lemon and ginger tea, honey and lemon tea or similar, every household has some sort of homemade cold remedy recipe. Not many people know though that hot drinks like the ones mentioned above don’t really kill viruses or bacteria, because we kill the antibacterial compounds of the ingredients beforehand with the boiling liquid we submerge them in. This applies to ginger, honey and garlic.
- 1 garlic clove
- Peel and divide a garlic clove into 4-5 thin slices.
- Place 1 slice on the back of your tongue like you’d do with a candy.
- Let it sit there for 2-3 minutes, keep swallowing the saliva mixed with the garlic juices and when you can’t taste anymore garlic flavour spit the garlic slice out and replace with a new one.
Your hot drink will warm you up, but that’s about it! If you want your homemade cold remedy to work for real think how you actually prepare it or what you consume it with so you don’t sabotage your effort.
