Allow me to introduce you to my new Turmeric Basil Detox Tea – a powerhouse of vitamins and antioxidants, with a beautiful, easy-to-fall-in-love-with flavour. Who would have thought that turmeric, basil and honey could be such a tasty match?! These three have amazing, power-packed health hugging properties for your body AND SOUL. So worth sharing!
So, as you might remember I have a box of fresh turmeric in the fridge. Yes, it is still there, but I am working through that box with loads of enthusiasm and considerable progress. The Turmeric Basil Detox Tea sort of happened when I was messing with another (yes, also turmeric containing) anti cold & flu/immune system boosting recipe.
I had a bunch of mint and basil chopped up already and begging to be used rather sooner than later, so without thinking too much I made 2 cups of tea. One with mint and the other with my new, staining-like-crazy-in-yellow fellow, turmeric.
Mind boggling properties of Turmeric Basil Detox Tea
Honestly? Mint just didn’t cut it for me. The fresh mint flavour is just too subtle and gets lost really quickly, overpowered by the turmeric. I mean, sure, you can pack up tons of it in a teapot and see whether it works for you, but somehow that fresh and initially crisp bouquet does not convince me. To me fresh mint tea always tastes best on its own.
But that basil?! Eh! What can I say… The aroma is sensational! Even when the tea cooled down most of the aroma remained. Seriously, amazing!
I am sitting here surrounded by the beautiful scent of fresh basil, spiced with turmeric and honey and while sipping my deliciously aromatic tea I read about all the amazing health benefits it offers.
Honey is a very conservative, old time hero of all sorts of “anti’s”: anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, anti-viral, anti-cancer, anti-heart disease. In that anti-all-that-can-upset-our-good-health sense honey is comparable to garlic. I wish they go better together though! And, no, I will not encourage anybody to add any form of garlic to the Turmeric Basil Detox Tea! Let’s enjoy the Garlic Free Friday today:) Btw. I’m serious – it doesn’t work (take my word for it).
Green tea is really helpful in detox and this is why I used it in the Turmeric Basil Detox Tea, but you can also use just filtered water. I have already shared some information I studied about green tea in my Energising, Detox, Green Smoothie post.
Basil really did surprise me. I mean, I appreciate that all fresh herbs have something good going for them, but next to antibacterial and anti inflammatory properties, vitamin K, magnesium and nutrients helping with the cardiovascular health basil also offers DNA protection – that was a surprise, I must admit!
Now, when it comes to turmeric – the most important compound is called curcumin – it has a powerful anti-inflammatory ability and is a very strong antioxidant. It also gives the turmeric that yellow colour. Curcumin is known to improve brain function and lower the risk of heart and brain diseases, Alzheimer’s disease and also age related chronic diseases like arthritis.
If you knew all that – great! But did you know that curcumin has also incredible benefits against depression? Well, that was a bombshell for me. I am well impressed!
I must admit that after all that reading my humble Turmeric Basil Detox Tea suddenly became so much more! And although there are only a few more sips left in my mug it still smells absolutely amazing and I’m about to go and make another one! And I might have curry for dinner!
